Since I came to the UK for studying, "What time is it?" has become the most common question used among my family, friends and me while using any Instant Messenger or telephone. It has the strong tendency to replace former popular greetings. For example, "How are you?", "how's the weather there?", "Have you eaten anything yet?" or "呷飽未？" (Taiwanese).

Asking people what time it is shows that you care about the person who you are talking to, and it reminds us that we are in different countries and live in different time zones. However, we are so lucky to live in the modern time, because technology helps us to easily connect to each other via the Internet by e-mails or Instant Messengers. Therefore, no matter where we are, and no matter what time it is, we can always keep in touch and say hi to each other.

"What time is it?" doesn't just mean what time it is anymore........There is something else behind the surface meaning. So, next time when you greet to a friend who is in different time zone, don't forget to show your care to him or her. ^_^
